Truck drivers sometimes refer to the logbooks in which they are required to accurately record their driving hours as “comic books” because they are so easily falsified. The logbook is intended to prevent drivers from working excessively long hours that cause driver impairment, fatigue and loss of alertness from sleep deprivation. About one-third of drivers interviewed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety admit to under-reporting their driving hours or over-reporting sleeping hours in their logbooks in order to earn higher commission pay.
